7 Rules for a Workweek That Doesn't Run You

Working for yourself was supposed to mean freedom. These rules help you get some of it back.

A good week isn't one where everything got done. It's one where the right things did, and you still had an evening.

  1. Decide the week on Sunday

Choose three outcomes before Monday starts. Everything else is optional.

  2. Protect one deep-work morning

No calls, no inbox. Put it in your calendar like a client meeting.

  3. Batch the small stuff

Emails, invoices and admin go in one block, not scattered through every day.

  4. Set a finish time

Work expands to fill the hours you allow it. Pick a stop time and keep it.

  5. Leave space between calls

Thirty minutes after each meeting stops one overrun from wrecking the afternoon.

  6. Keep one day light

A lighter Friday catches the week's spill-over without eating the weekend.

  7. Review on Friday

Ten minutes on what worked and what didn't makes next week easier to plan.

Try two rules for a month before adding more. The goal is a week you'd happily repeat.
